From the Top Breeding Center sets of broodstock can be obtained. The preferred ratio is 1 male for 2-3 females. YY-Male and XX-Female Tilapia can be put in production hapas at a weight of about 150 grams. Males and females are kept together as a family in a spawning unit. In order to get this ratio, sexing of the broodstock before stocking is required.
In the case YY males (always received as a separate batch) are used, sexing is an extremely important step in order not to contaminate the YY males with normal (XY) males. Extra attention should be given to this when selecting females (XX) out of a mixed sex (XX + XY) group. The XY males should be excluded from production.
A female lays her eggs in a nest, a male fertilizes these eggs and the female then takes the eggs in her mouth where they develop into larvae. Nesting material (a piece of pipe or flower pot) is provided in order to improve natural reproduction behaviour.
At least 1 spawning nest (e.g. a flowerpot) for every 2 males is provided. Harvesting takes place every 10 days. It is possible to distinguish 4 different development stages during harvest. These stages are preferably separated in incubators. Different spawning units may contain different spawning age classes to ensure a stable total production level.
